CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“AND JUST HOW LONG did you want to hang out here?” Jayne resisted the urge to drum her fingernails on the dashboard of the Jeep Emmett had rented for the day.

Newer and a whole lot cleaner than his Jeep that they’d left parked at an airfield three islands back, this vehicle was shiny black and they’d rolled the top off to explore St. Maarten. At least that’s what she’d thought they were doing until Emmett pulled over on the opposite side of the street from the Golddiggers casino shortly past noon and stared at the entrance.

For at least three minutes straight.

“Just a little longer,” he answered finally, eyes barely flickering in her direction. “Have I told you how damn incredible you look in that dress?”

“So incredible you can’t peel your eyes away from the casino doors for five seconds?” She knew her dress could slay most men at ten paces. Pale green, sheer organza covered a creamy white silk slip dress, the two layers swishing delicately as she walked. It felt sexy, looked sexy and even sounded erotic.

The fact that Emmett had turned blind and deaf in the course of the past few hours ashore definitely wasn’t the dress’s fault.

“God, Jayne, if it was up to me you’d be on my lap right now instead of sitting way the hell over there.” He slanted her a glance that flash-fried her skin and nearly sizzled the ends of her hair. “Have you got no use at all for a gentleman in your life?”

Tapping her lips, she considered the question carefully. She’d never had a gentleman before, so she couldn’t be sure.

“A gentleman would have offered to take me into that seafood restaurant over there, I think.” The scent of grilled salmon permeated the air, but it didn’t make her as hungry as Emmett’s suggestion. “But if I remember correctly, your lap isn’t such a bad place to be.”

Now she had his complete, undivided attention. It didn’t matter that they sat out in the open with the top rolled down or that tourists crowded both sides of the street in front of the casino. The whole world faded away to just Emmett and his dark eyes.

“If I pull you over here, my hands are going to be up your skirt a whole lot faster than you can say ‘I’m saving myself.’ Understand?”

Her thoughts flared into meltdown mode as her gaze drifted down to Emmett’s hands. One rested on the gearshift, the other on the door where the window was rolled down. She could practically feel them on her thighs already. Even though she would never allow such a thing.

Or would she?

Even as she considered the possibility, her heart slugged slow and hard in her chest as she lifted her eyes to meet his again. But something odd diverted her attention midway.

Horatio Garcia stood in front of Golddiggers casino, escorting a couple of older men toward a waiting limo. Why was it stupid Horatio had to ruin things just when she was starting to have fun?

Emmett turned to follow her gaze.
